The Design Rut

Take a look at the CSS Vault. Notice anything? The first thing that popped into my mind was "Wow. Look at all the center-aligned sites". I know, I know; I can't say much <chuckle />. My past two designs have fallen into this category (my first attempts at fixed width designs, actually), and I scrapped a new design a few weeks ago because it falls right in line with the rest of these sites.

I know that this design technique is "the thing" of modern web design, but why must 98% of the web-savvy fall in place in the moo-line? These sites are very nice looking and pleasing to the eye (some of the graphic work is awesome), but they all look the same.

Seeing The Vault just pushes me to finish and roll out my new design (I'm falling back on the tried and true liquid layout). The XWebMenu just may have to wait; I don't want to be branded.
